Autism Glossary V
Vaccine:
A
solution that is administered orally or as an injection in order to help
the body create defenses against a specific disease. Vaccines contain
bacteria or viruses (or parts of them) that ordinarily cause disease,
but have been altered so that they won't cause an infection.
Vestibular:
Pertaining to the sensory system located in the inner ear that
allows the body to maintain balance and enjoyably participate in
movement such as swinging and roughhousing. Visual Adaptations/Visual Supports: Written schedules, lists, charts, and picture sequences that convey meaningful information that allow the person with autism to function more independently, without constant verbal direction.
Visual
Discrimination: The ability to distinguish and detect
differences in objects, forms, letters, or words.
Visual Imagery:
Using recalled scenes or visual images in an attempt to relax or to
tolerate more stressful situations. Visual Motor: Related to the use of the eyes to discriminate and track objects and to perceive environmental cues. Visual motor skills are required to carry out tasks such as putting a puzzle piece into a puzzle or a key into a keyhole. Visual Schedule: A group of pictures or objects that guides a child through the order of events or activities. Visual Stimulus: That which stimulates the eye. In excess, it can cause confusion or agitation in individuals and can result in hyperactivity, perseverative behavior, or withdrawal. |
